Re: Request for urgent action

It is with tremendous anxiety and distress that we write to seek your (Excellency’s) attention in a matter of the utmost seriousness, urgent and importance.

As your Excellency is doubtless aware, Colonel Muammar Gaddaffi and his few remaining aids have upped their 42 year reign of terror on the Libyan people to an unprecedented and murderous level over the past week.

The images of slaughter and pillaging committed by Gaddaffi and his mercenaries as aired by the international media are but the tip of the iceberg. We have credible evidence from eye witnesses on the ground in Libya of at least 1000 unarmed civilians has been butchered and several thousands more injured in but a few days.

It is regrettable, to put at its mildest, that the civilised world appears looks on passively as Gaddaffi launches what appears to be his last and most desperate assault on his people. The Libyan regime’s flagrant overt breaches of all national and international laws as they relate to the treatment of civilians, not least the Geneva Convention on the Protection of Civilian Persons must be addressed immediately.

We therefore appeal to your Excellency to discharge your legally binding international duties and take all urgent and decisive actions in your power to help protect the Libyan people.
